Need help with Installing Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04

Hi there,

I am new to Linux and I must install Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04. I read the thread about the Salome-Meca installation and followed it step by step, but still, I am having problems with it.

What I did:

The first issue I encounter was to download the software itself. I tried the link on the website, but it doesn't work (give me a message that downloads failed). Somehow I got a copy of the software, installed prerequisites, and then followed the instruction on one of the threads to install Salome-Meca.

Problem:

After the installation was done it gave some errors. Below is the error messages:

amvali@amvali-VirtualBox:~$ ./salome_meca-2019.0.3-1-universal.run

Would you please help me? I am new to Linux and only know a few basic commands.

Thanks,

Re: Need help with Installing Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04

Hi,
Please follow step by step procedure detailed in #20 at H ttps://www.code-aster.org/forum2/viewtopic.php?id=24883 (Corerect the link in the beginning; I can't post url here). This problem is discussed thoroughly in the above post and also in other similar posts. You need to edit the "create_appli.sh" script and change "python" to "python2" there. See the above post for clarity. Make sure to install all the pre-requisites mentioned in the post before you install SM.

Best wishes

Re: Need help with Installing Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04

Hi Sukumar,

My installation was unsuccessful. I ran "md5sum salome_meca-2019.0.3-1-universal.tgz" and here what I got "edbc8f805ce72203f0ae70b17c7ebb95" which is according to ing.nicola reply to Zohir the download file is no good. I tried a few times but every time I get the message that the download failed. I tried "wget htps://www.code-aster.org/FICHIERS/salome_meca-2019.0.3-1-universal.tgz" and here is what happened:

aliagha@aliagha-VirtualBox:~$ wget htps://www.code-aster.org/FICHIERS/salome_meca-2019.0.3-1-universal.tgz

Re: Need help with Installing Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04

Good morning,

thousands of people are using these files, so it is a pretty bold assumption to think the download file is faulty, don't you think? You are running it in a virtual machine? Are all your environment variables alright? Is your OS installation within the VM alright? Did you follow the installation instructions of Salome Meca 2019?

Please find attached a md5sum of the file I downloaded on 5th january 2020. I found it in my backup. It has the same md5 and it runs flawlessly ever since on 3 machines with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS,

Mario.

EDIT: I am, of course, not using SM within a VM because I like performance.

Re: Need help with Installing Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04

Hi Mario,

Thank you for your reply. First I would like to apologize if I am asking stupid questions, I am new to the Linux world.

Yes, I am running in a virtual machine. I agree with you that thousand of people download SM files, but Every time I tried to download the SM file, I get a "download failed". I get an error message about 60% through the download. I downloaded the SM file using Windows (I used Chrome) and Linux (I used Firefox). Eventually, I used "wget" to download the SM file.

My Ubuntu installation is okay (at least that's what I think). I am not sure what do you mean by environment variables, would you please be more specific?

In the thread that Sukumar sent me, somebody said that if the md5sum is not exactly as what he post then there is something wrong with the download, please see the attached file.

I followed the procedure that Sukumar suggested. Please bear in mind that I am installing salome_meca-2019.0.3-1-universal on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

How can I fix this?

Thanks,
Ali

Re: Need help with Installing Salome-Meca on Ubuntu 20-04

Hi,

I am not sure where your problem lies. If your network is OK, then a normal download should not be a problem. But if the download is interrupted due to bad speed then it may be corrupt. It is good that you have checked md5sum.

Meanwhile, in my post you referred to, I did not include the obvious prerequisites like g++, gfortran, tcl, tcl-dev, tk, tk-dev etc. Please refer to Code-Aster Pre-requisite page for details. By default your system have some of these installed already. But please make sure that all of the prerequisites are installed in your system. I am telling these just because you mentioned to be new to the Linux world. I assure you that if you keep little patience, you will eventually find that this is an wonderful world. Because you have wide open "Doors" instead of "Windows" here! Forgive me if I appear to be too radical smile
You may use the following to check if those prerequisites are installed in your system:

 which gfortran

or

 whereis gfortran

etc.

Also, you may install them using following example code

 sudo apt-get install tcl tcl-dev tk tk-dev

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Sukumar
