Seeking advise to decide Salome Meca version installation

I have a 64 bit windows 10 machine with the following specifications.
  >CPU: Intel Core i7 12700K
  >RAM: 64GB
  >Graphics 1: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 770
  >Graphics 2: NVIDIA T1000 8GB

I want to run Salome Meca on this system. But I don't want to run the windows version of Salome Meca. I want to run the linux version of Salome Meca by installing a virtual machine using VirtualBox.

So my question is, on this date, which version of Ubuntu should I install on the VM & which version of Salome Meca should I install in that VM so that the installation process is error-free.

Please note that I will be doing a fresh install of Ubuntu in the VM & that VM will be dedicated to only Salome Meca. So I am free to make any changes to that system.

My goal here is to be able to do an error-free installation of Salome Meca.

Hello,
I think that you can try with WSL.
Follow the installation's instructions in the "DOWNLOAD" page of this site.

I recently installed Salome_Meca on my machine with Windows 11 but it should work with Windows 10 too.

Andrea

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, due to some constraints, I don't want to install anything other than Virtual Box on the main system since that would be too much trouble to keep track of any changes to system settings.

Using a virtual machine gives me a sandbox where i can alter any settings in that virtual machine. If required, I can also delete that VM & start from scratch with the install. Also, that VM will only have Salome Meca & so no other programs will interfere with the installation process/settings.

Hence I asked which version of Ubuntu & Salome Meca would work best on the VM.

Re: Seeking advise to decide Salome Meca version installation

Hello,

WSL2 is a kind of virtualization. In WSL you'll also set the number of cores, amount of RAM etc. just like in Virtualbox. My guess is, that Virtualbox will be slower than WSL, which is highly specialized to run Linux in it.

Regarding which distro to use, you'll get different answers. I'd do: WSL2 in Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, Singularity (Apptainer), latest Salome-Meca version from download-page. Also with this setup you'll probably have to apply some minor corrections like described in https:__//code-aster.org/forum2/viewtopic.php?id=26732

I do not know about the GPU, though. If it is not exposed properly by WSL to Ubuntu, you might have to use --soft when launching the container.

Mario.

Re: Seeking advise to decide Salome Meca version installation

Thank you Mario,

I saw another post about successfully installing Salome Meca 2020.0.1 on Ubuntu 22.04.

Based on your suggestion of WSL2, I tried to do the same in Ubuntu installed on WSL2 on my system.

I faced some errors during installation, & have listed the same in that thread (see post #7)

Link to the topic mentioning about installation procedure
See post #7 about the errors I faced while following the installation procedure.

I hope It's OK to cross link between posts like this.

If anyone can Identify the issue, I'd be grateful.

Re: Seeking advise to decide Salome Meca version installation

Hello,

why is there a python2 instance in an U22.04 installation? This should not be the case. In U22.04 python3 is standard, python2 was EOL Jan. 1st 2020. Also in my working installation, there is no hint of python2, I only applied the corrections in the above link. Everything else is standard,

Mario.

EDIT: Oh, I misread your post. You installed an older version of Salome-Meca in U22.04. I thought about the containerized version, which is today's standard.

Re: Seeking advise to decide Salome Meca version installation

Thank you Mario,

Unfortunately, I could not figure out what was causing the error when installing Salome Meca 2020 in Ubuntu 22.04 running on WSL2 on my system.

Hence, I want to try your suggestion of installing the latest version of Salome Meca from the download page.

As of today, the latest version is salome_meca-lgpl-2022.1.0-1-20221225.

However, as mentioned in post #2,

Andrea wrote:

I was unable to find the download instructions.

I also searched the FAQ portion in the Downloads page. But that only led me to the Code Aster Installation forum webpage.

Can anyone please provide me the link to the installation instruction webpage of the latest version of Salome meca?

EDIT: After a google search, I was able to find another website that has listed the instructions to install Salome Meca using singularity on Ubuntu. Using that, I was able to successfully install & open Salome Meca 2022. As you mentioned, I had to run it in software rendering mode since there was a failure on trying to start it normally.

If possible, I will list the complete commands I used to install Salome Meca, right from the fresh install of Ubuntu.
